‘Tis the season for ultra sheer hosiery. Black pantyhose is a bit heavy handed for spring time, so I’ve been breaking out some of the super sheer styles. I’m a pretty big fan of Hanes Silk Reflections, as I think they are a very nice meeting of looks, feel, durability, and price. I had high hopes for the Silk Reflections Transparent Sheer pantyhose.

Let me preface this by saying that I have noticed some serious inconsistencies between “batches” of this style. I’ve worn several pair, in both nude and black. These various pairs were purchased at different times and places. I’ve notices some slight variations in the fit and feel of the regular Silk Reflections, so, it comes as no surprise to me that the Transparent Sheer line had some inconsistencies too.

Fit: The yarn composition that is used to achieve the ultra sheer look also brings a problem: they hose just aren’t as stretchy as a more conventional sheer hosiery. They also tend to become slightly baggy around the knees and ankles. It seem that they have a higher nylon / spandex ratio than other hosiery.

Look: The nude pantyhose I have do a nice job of disappearing on my skin. They have a slight sheen to them that catches a bit of light. I kind of like it – your legs look bare, but.. just a bit better. That subtle shine gives your legs a little something extra that will keep people looking at you a second and third time.

Durability: I’m averaging about 2. 3 wears in these. That does bring the cost per wearing down quite a bit to around $3.30 per wearing.

Feel: These are the kind of pantyhose that give pantyhose a bad name. Although they actually look pretty good, they feel awful on your skin. When I say that they feel like burlap, I’m really not kidding. The nude pair were the worst offender. Some of my black pairs were less guilty of the offense. I even had one black pair that actually felt okay. Just OKAY though. I made it through a night out at the club wearing them without any complaints, but it wasn’t a particularly enjoyable experience, like the Pretty Polly 10 Denier Gloss Tights were. I was sad to take them off. Hanes, I don’t know what happened here, but the Silk Reflectio

ns Transparent Sheer are a flop - particularly when there are far superior hosiery offerings from the European hosiery mills. I know that you guys can do better than this.

Fit: 6.5

Feel: 3

Look: 7

Longevity: 8

Cost Per Wear: $3.30

Conclusion: When it comes to ultra sheer tights / pantyhose / stockings, There are far better alternatives to Hanes Silk Reflections Transparent Sheer. If I find that they have changed thier formula and put a better product out, I’ll let you know.

I recently got a shipment of the Pretty Polly 10 Denier Gloss tights in 2 colors, black and nude. Normally I would just review one color or another and assume said review would apply to all colors. Last weekend I went out in the black tights. I meant to write a review, but I have put it off until now. Last night I wore the nude. To my surprise, there were some marked differences between them.

Black:

When you start getting down into the very low denier counts (below 15), hosiery makers tend to use a type of thread that has some peculiar properties. It can look / feel kind of abrasive right out of the package, but as they stretch onto your legs, they transform into a silky second layer. It’s kind of bizarre. Such was the case with the black hose. Once on, they fit well and stayed in place well. They are very sheer and give a nice black sheen / outline to the leg. I think that these would play very well in a special occasion setting. If you wear these to the office, just know that you WILL be drawing some eyeballs down to your gams that day. That may or may not be a winning strategy for you at work. They feel very nice to the touch. My friend Mandy was running her hand up and down my leg, and it felt fantastic. She loved touching them. When my legs rub together, they felt nice, too. I’d give it an 8. As for longevity, these are a 1 wear pair. Yeah, I could perhaps get 2 wearings out of them, but that second wear would be precarious. There would be spots where you’d see that a run COULD develop, and you would spend the evening praying that it did not, in fact, run.

That being said, I’ve gone out with all 3 pairs I ordered. All 3 black pairs survived their first night out. Pairs 1 and 2 showed too many signs of imminent failure for me to dare wearing them out for a second time. Pair #3 looked solid, but part way through their second night out, they developed a few small holes. These are 10 denier hosiery, so the threads are thin and far apart (comparatively speaking). There were a few spots where the material just gave way and let a small hole form. Interestingly enough, none of these holes developed into a run. They just became holes, and stayed holes. Probably 2 mm in diameter. Not big, by any means. From 12 feet away, people probably didn’t notice. All things considered, I ‘d say that these pantyhose lived up to their price point very well.

fit: 9

feel: 8

look: 8

longevity: can only be trusted for 1 wearing

cost per wear: $4.50

Now let’s talk about the nude pair.

Oh wow…

Every now and then, you pull on a pair of pantyhose that are just divine from the first inch – and that was the case with these. They looked silky coming out of the package, and as they stretched up my legs, they lived up to that first impression. Sometimes hose will change in character as you stretch the material out (like the aforementioned black). I don’t understand why, but these nude versions were silky in all states of stretch. Once on, they added a nice sheen to my legs. In terms of color, they are just a mild tan shade. If it weren’t for the shine, I’m guessing many people wouldn’t guess that I was wearing anything. When I rub my legs together, they feel *divine*. My legs are super silky – even slippery – to the touch. In terms of feel, I’d have to say these are a 9.8 . I’ve never worn anything that feels better on my skin. I only hold out on that last .2 because I have this notion that there’s always something a bit better out there. And remember – I only paid $4.50 for these. Just by the logic of price alone, there must be better – though it’s hard to imagine.

Now, I must sadly mention the only 2 downsides to these. As far as fit goes, they are not particularly generous. They run just a tad shorter than the black ones. I’m talking 3/4 of an inch different. Not huge, but enough that I’m always feeling like I need to pull them up. They have a boxer brief, but it has zero control to it. They may as well have made these sheer to waist – which is fine with me, I love sheer to waist hosiery. The last bummer: they developed a hole in them toward the end of the night. I snagged the back of my calf on the sharp edge of a chair, which is what probably caused this. A small 1/8″ ladder / run then developed from that hole and ran all the way down the leg to my foot. Luckily it was dark, and given that these hose are *very* sheer nude, it wasn’t immediately obvious. It was sad though; I absolutely LOVE these pantyhose and was hoping to get 2 wearings out of them. Interestingly, they do not seem to suffer from the same weakness in the weave that caused the black version of these to develop holes spontaneously. I don’t know enough about the manufacture of these hosiery to know if the differences are all in my head, or if there really are some fundamental differences in how they are made. If any of you do know more about this, please drop me a line and share some knowledge.

fit: 7.9

feel: 9.8

look: 9.8

longevity: 1 wearing *

cost per wear: $4.50

Last thoughts: I was smart and bought several pair of these at once. I’m already looking forward to wearing them again. I’d definitely consider these a special occasion hosiery because of how gorgeous they are and how wonderful they feel on my skin. At a cost per wear (CPW) of $4.50, they are also fairly economical. I know of more expensive hosiery that you’ll get more wears out of, that don’t feel as nice, that will cost more per wear. That being said, I think that the Pretty Polly 10 Denier Gloss Tights are an excellent buy.

* I have several more pairs in nude. I’ll be wearing them out soon. If subsequent wearings show a marked difference in longevity, I’ll update this number accordingly.

Some have been predicting it. Some have been dreading it. Some have done business on it. Some have been praying for it. The day has arrived:

Men in pantyhose.

I know, I know. This sounds insane, but bear with me for a minute. There is an interesting story here. It’s been all over the media – but before I give you the story they missed, take a moment to enjoy Madonna’s brand new video for her new single, “Girl Gone Wild” in which she is surrounded by guys in tights and heels:

Click on the photo to see Madonna's new video for "Girl Gone Wild"

So now that you’ve seen men rocking pantyhose and heels alongside Madonna, let’s talk about where this all came from. One of the best kept secrets in the world is the near ubiquitous fascination men have with women’s legs in fine hosiery. As it turns out, a huge number of men carry that fascination over into the world of fetish – seeing their own legs in hosiery. Itallian designer Emilio Cavalini made an observation:

“When we started our online shop we noticed that a lot of tights sized medium-large were being purchased by men … So I did a search on the Internet and discovered there is a cult following for mantyhose.”

Though the media frenzy about this happened during the first week of March 2012, men have been buying and wearing tights and pantyhose for decades. Why do you think certain sizes happen to always be in short supply at the store? The story blew up on hundreds of blogs. The mainstream media was talking about it, too. This excerpt from New York Magazine is a good example of the reporting that’s been happening:

Apparently some dudes are into wearing fancy tights these days, according to upscale hosiery retailer Emilio Cavallini, who tells WWD that purchases by men (and for men) now account for 2 to 3 percent of their annual sales. … So he decided to cater to male customers by creating unisex tights … Cavallini says he’s seen a few more daring gentlemen (European, it goes without saying) wear them with shorts. Which brings us to the inevitable question about unisex tights: To put it delicately, wouldn’t there be a problematic fit discrepancy between men and women in the groin area? Cavallini says no: “If it’s fine for Italian guys, it’s fine for the world.”

Europeans do it better

European hosiery makers have always been very far ahead on the curve compared to American makers. They have always used better materials, far superior workmanship, and for the same or less cost than their American counterparts. They also were first to introduce hosiery for men.

Wolford is widely regarded as the "Mercedes of hosiery"

Wolford's "waist sock" - a.k.a. tights for men.

Wolford was the first to introduce a “waist sock”. (Wolford is considered the finest maker of hosiery in the world. Look at any fashion spread that includes hosiery, and you will usualy see “Hosiery by Wolford” in the credits.) Their waist sock / men’s tights style isn’t available anymore. If I were a betting man, I would say that they realized most men were still buying their women’s styles, and making one specifically for men was not worth the overhead. ( Ladies, if you have not treated yourself to some of Wolford’s hosiery, you are missing out. They feel amazing AND last a very long time. Check out this working woman’s review of them. )

Americans Try Really Hard

An American hosiery seller, G. Leiberman & Sons, Ltd, came to market with a line of sheer hosiery that were designed for men (including a fly opening), and aggressively marketed as such, under the manly name “ActivSkin“. “These aren’t your grandma’s pantyhose!” was one of their early taglines. Me thinks thou doest protest too much. I’ve tried them, and they were everything that people make fun of grandma pantyhose being: thick, uncomfortable, and icky-orange brown. Here is some text and an image from the front page of their website:

Activskin: not a lot of fashion happening here.

“Welcome to G. Lieberman & Sons, Ltd. We are the world’s largest seller of legwear for men, under the Activskin® brand name. Why would a man wear legwear? Glad you asked! Legwear benefits include sports performance, leg health, work stamina, and leisure comfort. And mantyhose is fashionable. Check out our Comfilon® loungewear fashions, too. Welcome to the 21st century!”

Not All Europeans Have Good Taste:

E-Mancipate.net is a hosiery for men advocacy website based in London. Their stated mission:

“This website is about pantyhose for men / tights for men / mantyhose as a fashion, sport and health related garment. We provide free information to sportsmen, health professionals, fashion designers, hosiery manufacturers and retailers. We believe that although pantyhose on men are still an unusual look, wearing them is great way to decorate the male legs, to provide warmth, comfort and additional performance.”

I’m far from a fashion maven… but seriously? Doesn’t this rhetoric from ActivSkin and E-Mancipate smack of side-stepping an issue? More on that later. E-Manicipate Founder Chan Kraemer has obviously put a TON of work into this website, and I applaud that. He’s been a major player in the coverage of this story. His website is an ambitious PR project, though some of the photo sets seem horrifically detached from “fashion” or function:

The winner of the ugly sweater contest is not happy to be here. She is wondering how much longer she will be forced to sit next to the bored, creepy man in the weird green super-hero hose.

…but a LOT of Europeans do, in fact, do it better:

Now let’s get on with some people who have done a nicer job of it. French hosiery maker Gerbe is known for their very fine women’s pantyhose and stockings. They branched out into the men’s category:

This is how it's done, boys and girls. Photo courtesy of www.Shapings.com

Not too shabby. Gerbe's nude pantyhose.

According to Gerbe, sheer black hose aren't a bad look with your dress shirt.

The German hosiery line Levee also introduced pantyhose for him and her:

<img class=" " title="Pantyhose for him and her by Levee. Hosiery for him and her by Levee. Photo courtesy of www.Shapings.com

The aforementioned Italian designer Emilio Cavalini is the one that caught the attention of the media with his print oriented styles:

Regardless of why the story broke now, and not a few years ago, it’s here. Thank you Madonna and Cavalini.
Those of you that are reading this blog are probably aware of my own hosiery fetish / fascination (if not, check this out). I’ve been doing this for years, and have done a bit of writing about it during that time. Last week ABC Nightline contacted me about my “fashion sense”. They also caught on to the brosiery story, and decided to do a piece on it. They liked my look and the way I pull it off; the producer I was talking to eventually felt the story had come to a stale mate. The story was not materializing in the way she thought it would.

Supermodel Tyson Beckford rocking his new skull print Cavalini Mantyhose

You see, in Europe, this may have more of a fashion element to it. In the United States, this is still very much an underground fetish topic. This is why the website copy from places like ActivSkin and E-Manicpate read the way they do – emphasizing the “practical benefits” of wearing them. These products and websites are essentially tools for guys who’ve been married for 17 years, but never confessed their hosiery fetish to their wife. It’s a tool for them to say, “See honey? It’s not “cross dressing”. These are for MEN!”

My look: dress shirt, tie, skirt, sheer pantyhose, heels. All in black.

Come on fellas…. let’s be honest. It’s cross dressing, and that’s why you like it. It’s whatever you want to call it, I suppose. Call it whatever you need to call it in order feel like more of a man. For the same reason that most men will choose a shot of cheap gut-rot whiskey over an appletini, I believe we see male hosiery advocates leaning on ideas like “circulation support”, “enhanced sports performance”, “work stamina”, “protection from the cold”: They cannot fully own up to the fact that they enjoy the sensation and experience of something that is traditionally associated with women.
The media and the makers of said hosiery are struggling to find a term that everyone can stomach. “guylons”, “brosiery”, “hetards”, and “mantyhose” being some top contenders. This is not really about fashion, it’s about men not being able to accept their own preferences.
How do I feel about the brosiery / e-mancipate movement? Honestly, I don’t care. If it helps some 47 year old accountant in Kansas City feel like he’s not a sissy because his pantyhose say “men” on the package, that’s fine. My message is more geared toward people who don’t yet have many people to answer to in their lives…
Be true to yourself, first and foremost, at all times. Live with no regrets. Ask no permission and make no apologies for living authentically. Take the skeletons out of the closet, and make room for all of those fabulous high heels you can’t wait to buy.

We all know about the cheap store brands of pantyhose and tights… Take a moment and look in the photo credits in any fashion magazine, and you’ll see some very high end hosiery being used. Falke, Gerbe, Wolford… many of these high end European hosiery brands are very expensive. Are they worth it? Is there any way that it’s even remotely sane to spend $49 on a pair of tights? Read what blogger Tracie Egan Morrissey has to say about it:

Worth It: Keep It Tight

by Tracie Egan Morrissey at http://jezebel.com/5887402/worth-it-keep-it-tight

Much unlike many a magazine editor who recommends you buy all sorts of crap that they most likely got for free, your Jezebel staff doesn’t get jack shit (other than books, unsolicited). And that’s how it should be. But on our own time, in our personal lives, we still buy stuff. So this is Worth It, our recommendation of random things that we’ve actually spent our own money on. These are the things we buy regularly or really like, things we’d actually tell our friends about. And now we’re telling you.

Yes, Wolford, the Austrian hosiery brand is expensive, with tights averaging about $50 a pair—but hear me out! As someone who wears tights about four or five times a week, I need them to be durable because I spent the better part of my 20s ducking into Duane Reade to frantically grab a pair of tights after discovering—always at the last minute—that I’d already torn through the cheapies I was wearing. Now I’m simply too old for that shit. I have a kid. I don’t have time for pit stops and running-around nonsense. Every. Second. Counts.

I keep a rotation of about five pairs of Wolford tights, varying in thickness and color (although my preference is either black Velvet de Luxe 66 or Mat Opaque 80). It’s a practice I began back in 2007, when I purchased my first pair—which finally just got a run in them last week. They lasted five fucking years. Can you believe that? And I haven’t been kind to them, either. I’ve traveled in them, crawled around on floors (don’t ask!) in them, literally walked miles in them without shoes, and even subjected them to my annoying-ass dog who jumps up on me and scratches at my legs whenever I walk through the door. That’s a lot of wear with no tear.

But beyond pure utilitarian purposes, I like Wolford tights because I passionately hate tights that are too “shiny.” You know how when tights look too Spandex-y and get that shiny line down them? Wolford tights are truly matte, truly opaque. This is one of those cases in which you get what you pay for.

Hollywood Legs: It’s All About Legwork

By Karyn Monget and Marcy Medina

Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock is spellbound by Anne Bancroft in “The Graduate.” Photo By Courtesy Everett Collection

You need talent, looks and style to make it in Hollywood — and great gams don’t hurt, either. From vintage musicals with icons like Ginger Rogers or Ann Miller to a modern-day homage to burlesque in “Nine” with Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson and Fergie, a comedy like “The Seven Year Itch” featuring Marilyn Monroe, a classic like “The Graduate” with Anne Bancroft or the electrifying on-stage presence of Tina Turner — there’s one prerequisite: killer legs.

But amazing legs don’t just happen. Here, celeb stylists and costume designers share their tricks for creating sexy, screen-worthy legs. By Marcy Medina and Karyn Monget

• Phillip Bloch has dressed celebs from Sandra Bullock and Salma Hayek to Nicole Kidman and Halle Berry, whom he has wardrobed for The Golden Globes, The Emmys, the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards and the Oscars. He believes a gown with a high-cut slit that reveals a hint of leg is the sexiest look on the red carpet.

Marilyn Monroe Photo By 20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection

“I love slits. It’s a great way to show off legs and you don’t have to have great legs to look sexy,” said Bloch. “There’s a return to old-fashioned Hollywood glamour and it feels like Juliet Prowse or Ginger Rogers all over again. I’m seeing a lot of slits on the red carpet, like the [Versace] gown with thigh-high slit that Lea Michele wore to the SAG Awards. I also love the look of an evening gown with a high-cut slit because it’s not too brazen… It leaves a little bit to the imagination, not like the short skirts and HotPants everybody’s wearing.”

Favorite legs on screen: Anne Bancroft in “The Graduate,” Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman” and Raquel Welch in “One Million Years B.C.”

• Soyon An, costume designer for “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” said a monochromatic leg and shoe creates “great gams.”

“One of the things I love to do to elongate the look of the leg is to use a tone-on-tone look like nude tights paired with nude-tone shoes. Another trick is wearing back-seam hosiery that looks like it runs down a stiletto heel for a really long leg.”

As for the biggest sins, she added, “Women shouldn’t wear shoes that cut them off at the ankle. If the shoe strap runs across the ankle, it’s a no-no. But it’s totally OK if it’s a V-shape or asymmetrical strap because it shapes the ankle and looks sexy.

“Some girls don’t have to worry about their legs, like Katy Perry and Carrie Underwood, who have amazing legs.”

Favorite legs on screen: “‘Nine’ comes to mind when I think of great legs and movies,” said An.

• Cristina Ehrlich, whose clients include Amy Adams and Penélope Cruz, said, “I personally love — for myself and my clients — black opaque tights….They are a necessary winter wardrobe staple and help create the perfect Parisian-inspired ensemble. I particularly love Falke hosiery….If you really want to get creative, the color options from Falke are endless.”

Legwear, she said, is a great way to introduce interest into the wardrobe with color and texture.

“High heels are key. The elongating effect of a heel impacts the length and proportion of the entire body,” she added. “Skirt length is important when considering what flatters the leg most. I think age demographic should also be considered. It’s always a good idea to adjust the length of the skirt to make sure the best part of your leg is featured, and you create the illusion of length in the leg.”

She added that she uses Clarins Leg Emulsion to give legs a healthy sheen.

Playing up the legs in “Moulin Rouge.” Photo By Courtesy Everett Collection

Favorite legs on screen: “The first time Daniel Day Lewis sees Juliette Binoche in ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being.’ It’s the scene where she dives into the pool in a black swimsuit and we see an image of her legs underwater.”

• Randall Christensen, costume designer for “Dancing with the Stars,” called legwear the number-one priority for celebs to look sexy on the hit TV series.

“Dancing tones everything from the ankles to wonderful calves, thighs and a firm derriere. So, cha-cha your way to sexy legs. Also get some color onto your legs with self-bronzers, a safe way to tan up the legs and draw attention to the shapes and curves.

“One thing that is so fun and a bit playful is to accent an ankle with a bit of body art like Swarovski press-on tattoos. They are fun, playful and most of all, removable. But keep away from ankle bracelets. Being a former dancer, it’s all about elongating those legs, so don’t break the line by having a clunky ankle bracelet.”

Favorite legs on screen: “Any movie with Cyd Charisse. She did a phenomenal job of showcasing the most beautiful legs in the industry in ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ ‘The Bandwagon’ and ‘Silk Stockings.’ Marilyn Monroe in ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ would definitely be next in line. That opening number with Marilyn and Jane Russell, in the red sequin gowns, cut up to there — Wow.”

• Allison Leach, costume designer for “The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers” Web series, said boots create sexy legs with an attitude.

Tina Turner Photo By Mary Evans/Ronald Grant/Everett Collection

“Boots balance out the hips and make you feel powerful. A shoe you can rule in, that lets you walk beautifully, is always gonna make for an overall sexier silhouette in motion. I have very pretty shoes that are so unbearable that they have been relegated to home decor at this point.

“Pilates works wonders for leg confidence. I like how pilates elongates the leg muscles like a dancer’s….Designing for the LXD has put me in full service to the lines of the leg. A dancer’s top priority is often showing off their leg articulation. When the look doesn’t call for double-layered Capezios, I use metallic skinny jeans like Kill City’s Junkie Silver coated stretch denim or American Apparel’s disco pants, which have both awesome compression and reflective highlights that create sexy 3-D legs.”

Favorite legs on screen: “I have the poster of Brian De Palma’s “Dressed to Kill” in my entry way, featuring a Graduate-like shot of black stockings. It inspires me to ask myself each time I leave the house — are you dressed to kill?

“My favorite scene in the recent ‘Mildred Pierce’ redux miniseries (designed by the legendary Ann Roth) was when Guy Pearce slips up Kate Winslet’s skirt to reveal her much-discussed ‘working woman’s legs’ in nude stockings and a girdle with garters…He is kissing and worshiping her calves, which really reveals the eroticization of the legs during that period…It used to be all about ‘nice gams.’ I’m glad we are moving away from T&A and getting back into an emphasis on legs. There’s also the scene in ‘The Piano’ when Harvey Keitel finds a tiny hole in the calf of Holly Hunter’s woolen stockings and it’s the first time he touches her skin. I love how in historical drama, the sex appeal is in the discovery of the body beneath the garments, rather than the flesh parade we are used to these days.”

• Jill Ohanneson, costume designer for the ABC-TV series “Revenge,” said, “I love sheers on any legs in heels, as they give an elegant hint of color without the heaviness of an opaque tight. But those same opaque tights look amazing with flats and boots.

“Shimmery tights, like shiny fabrics, do weird things on camera — unlike real life — so I tend to stay away from them. And nothing is sexier than a great pair of fishnets with the right outfit.

“I do love Wolford stockings as they are so well made and hug the leg beautifully. And Donna Karan has always done a great job combining hosiery and shapewear together and has a really large selection of colors, textures and patterns. Hue also has really fun patterns and colors. The most flattering shoe on any leg is a high-heeled pump or sling-back, which elongates the leg. Ankle traps and Mary Janes are harder to wear as the strap line can accentuate thick ankles and calves.”

Favorite legs on screen: Claudette Colbert’s revealing leg scene in “It Happened One Night.” She noted, however, “I think my favorites have got to be the musicals ‘Chicago,’ ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘Burlesque,’ because when you’re dancing it’s all about the legs. Also all those wonderful Esther Williams movies with beautiful girls in sexy vintage swimsuits. And I think ‘Sex And The City’ did a really good job of making sure that the shoes, and therefore the girls’ legs, looked great.”
For Your Eyes Only

Playing up the legs in “For Your Eyes Only.” Photo By EON/Ronald Grant Archive/Mary Evan

• George Kotsiopoulos, stylist and host of E’s “Fashion Police,” said fishnets are his legwear of choice.

“I love fishnets because they make even unshapely legs look shapely. A nude fishnet is a great way of doing a bare-leg look without really having a bare leg. Some women think black is too severe, so tan, gray or brown tones it down. And I love the idea of matching sheer hosiery with the same color dress. More people should do it.

“Even though a bare leg looks nice, I can’t understand how women can go around with bare legs,” he added. “If you’re doing an ankle strap or bootie, an opaque tight in the same color really lengthens the leg. And I like tights with sandals, it’s fun. Any heel with a really low vamp is going to lengthen the leg. With a longer skirt, I like ankle-strap shoes. If you don’t have shapely ankles, a strap helps to create the illusion of one.”

Favorite legs on screen: Liza Minnelli in “Cabaret,” Ann-Margret in “Kitten With a Whip,” Shirley MacLaine in “Irma la Douce” and Sharon Stone in “Basic Instinct.”

“There’s also the scene in ‘Working Girl’ where Melanie Griffith is at the bar and Harrison Ford first sees her. Her stockings have back seams and little crystals. The clothes she wore when she transformed [from a secretary to executive] are so timeless and beautiful — and her legs are fantastic.”

• Lindsay Albanese, whose clients include Kristin Cavallari and Maria Menounos, is a fan of sheer black hosiery.

“Supersheer black hosiery is perfect for a bit of coverage while still showing off the legs in chilly climates. I also have hundreds of black opaque tights. When in doubt, they always do the trick for style and warmth.

“Any hosiery with a vertical print or design is key to avoid making the legs look bigger than they are. Anything with a sky-high heel elongates the leg. Simple peep- or round-toe shoe styles will always be the best bet because they show off the foot and are a simple silhouette. Nude heels also create the illusion of a longer leg.

“I also love Jergens self tanning lotion and I use NARS bronzing oil, but it’s expensive. So, I found a product at Victoria’s Secret that does that same thing for a fraction of the cost.”

Favorite legs on screen: Julia Roberts wearing white boots in “Pretty Woman.”

• Sophia Banks-Coloma, who dresses Kristin Chenoweth and Maggie Grace, and recently costumed Amber Heard in the upcoming indie film “Syrup,” said polka-dots and nude-tones are her go-to items.

“I just styled Jennifer Aspen of ABC’s upcoming ‘Good Christian Belles’ for New York Fashion Week in a lot of tights, and I just sent Melissa Rauch of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ nude tights to wear on the Craig Ferguson show. I think a nude pump makes the leg look longer….I love Brian Atwood and Louboutin pumps for a longer leg. And a pencil skirt is great for a long leg as well as a slim-leg pant.”

Favorite legs on screen: The cancan girls in “Moulin Rouge” and Marilyn Monroe in “How to Marry a Millionaire.”
